Police officer charged with causing death by dangerous driving

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Sep 11, 2024

An Avon & Somerset Police constable will be appearing at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on Thursday charged with causing death by dangerous driving while driving an unmarked police vehicle.

Bristol24/7 is unable to name the officer because they will be asking the court to keep their identity anonymous.

The charges of causing death by dangerous driving and causing death by careless driving have come after an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

It follows a road traffic collision on Newfoundland Circus, between Cabot Circus and the M32, on November 5 2021 in which the officer was driving an unmarked police vehicle and was pursuing a Volkswagen Tiguan which had failed to stop for police.

During the pursuit, the Volkswagen collided with a Honda Jazz with the driver of the Honda dying in hospital after sustaining serious injuries in the collision.

In a statement, the IOPC said: “We decided to investigate after receiving a mandatory referral from Avon and Somerset Police in November 2021.

“Following the end of our investigation we sent a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for consideration of any potential criminal offence. The CPS subsequently authorised the charge.”
