New specialist SEND school to open in Bristol
A new specialist free school will provide 164 places for children and young people in Bristol with special educational needs and disabilities.
Due to open in September 2028, Trym Valley Academy will be located on the site of the former Elmfield School for the Deaf off Greystoke Avenue in Southmead.
The new school will be funded as part of the government’s £3bn SEND reform package, with Bristol North West MP and chief secretary to the prime minister saying he is “delighted” to have secured the funding for the school within his constituency.

“Securing DfE funding for Trym Valley Academy is a huge step forward for Bristol,” said Christine Townsend, chair of the children & young people committee at Bristol City Council, which has a target of creating 569 new specialist places.
“It will transform the lives of many children and families, ensuring that those with the most complex needs have access to excellent education and support within their own community.”
Andrew Buckton, CEO of Enable Trust, a specialist SEND and alternative provision trust who will manage Trym Valley Academy, added: “We continue to be thrilled to be working in partnership with Bristol City Council to plan, design and soon open Trym Valley Academy.
“The school will provide an exceptional holistic learning environment for children and young people with complex learning difficulties.”
