New plans for fire damaged historic church
New plans have been revealed for St Michael on the Mount Without church at the foot of St Michael’s Hill in Kingsdown, which was badly damaged by a fire last October.
The Diocese of Bristol has announced that it will begin to clear debris on the site of the 15th century church and make safe masonry on the northern wall. Experts will try and preserve any salvageable heritage items during this work.
Once the site has been cleared a temporary roof structure will be installed while experts try to save as much of the the original structure as possible.
Extensive damage was caused to the roof when the fire broke out on October 16 last year and parts of the building remain unsafe.
The church was a well-known shelter for squatters and was on Historic England’s Buildings at Risk register.
Work will begin this month and continue over the spring and into late summer.
Once the work is completed the building is expected to be put up for sale in the autumn.
