New pedestrian crossings to be installed
Three new parallel, toucan and zebra crossings look likely to be installed to make getting to the other side of busy roads safer for both pedestrians and cyclists.
The new crossings are set to be located across Merchants Road next to the Pump House in Hotwells, across the Portway close to Sea Walls car park and across Sylvan Way in Sea Mills near its junction with Woodleaze.
The crossings are part of a number of proposals along and near the Portway, which also include new speed humps on adjoining streets and speed limit reductions.
On their statutory consultation page, Bristol City Council say the Portway project “is a key component of the strategic corridors programme, which seeks to address regional congestion, improve bus reliability and promote sustainable travel modes”.
“Making Bristol and the wider region’s transport network more efficient will deliver growth, productivity and reduce air pollution.”
The two crossings across the Portway will be toucan crossings operated by a button while the crossing on Sylvan Way will be a zebra crossing.
The crossing in Hotwells will be a parallel crossing: similar to zebra crossings but including a cycle route alongside the black and white stripes.
It will be located at a notoriously dangerous point to cross currently, with the view of oncoming cars from the direction of the Nova Scotia partly obscured by Merchants Road bridge.
