New community mural painted in Withywood

By Martin Booth  Sunday Jul 21, 2019

Bristol artist Amy Hutchings worked with Year 9 students from Merchants’ Academy to create a new mural in Withywood.

The vibrant artwork at Creative Workspace on Queen’s Road was the result of a community project and artist residency funded by Arts Council England.

The Creative Opportunity Giver (COG) Residencies awarded by Brave Bold Drama are for artists who are interested in finding new ways to engage with the south Bristol community through participatory creative activities.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!

…and after the creation of the community mural

Merchants’ Academy students had been asked what creativity means to them and why is it important?

Amy took their designs, key themes and imagery and collated them into a collaborative mural, with students creating stencils which they applied to the wall.

Brave Bold Drama artistic director Gill Simmons said: “The mural has become a real talking point already and younger children are loving it. I see them smiling and talking about the pictures. It’s just flipping great!”

The completed mural features themes and imagery from Merchants’ Academy students
