Mikey Please designs new Bristol24/7 magazine cover
A rather perplexed ogre stands between an intuitive Glumfoot and an engrossed Rene as they navigate through a map of Bristol on Bristol24/7’s new magazine cover.
The three characters – Glumfoot, Rene and the ogre – are fragments of animator and author Mikey Please’s imagination as well as reality, being modelled on his wife, son and himself.
Having first appeared in the Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning animator’s debut picture book, The Cafe at the Edge of the Woods, the three characters will return with their quirk, wit and appetite for magic in Mikey’s second book, The Cave Downwind of the Cafe.

In his bespoke illustration for the September-October magazine, Mikey celebrates the onset of Autumn, with the three characters enclosed in a frame of orange and green leaves, teal-coloured vines and other traces of foliage. The three characters are thinking hard and sifting through a map of Bristol, trying to pick a place to visit and continue their adventures.
In Mikey’s first book, Glumfoot, known for his sharp thinking and wisdom, helps Rene satisfy the ogre’s weird and fantastical cravings. The second book is a prequel, diving deep into Glumfoot’s story before he stumbled upon the cafe at the edge of the woods.
The Cave Downwind of the Cafe will be available in bookshops from September 11
As part of a deal with HarperCollins Children’s Books, Mikey will soon have four other books to his credit, two of which will be young adult novels.
In 2024, Mikey also won the Waterstones Children’s Book of the Year award for his first book, the Cafe at the Edge of the Woods.
While the Cave Downwind of the Cafe officially releases on September 11, the award-winning author will be at Waterstones in the Galleries for a special launch event on September 9, with attendees also taking home free goodies.
