Man arrested after concerns of ‘potentially explosive items’

By Karen Johnson  Tuesday Jul 22, 2025

A man has been arrested from an address in south Bristol after concerns about access to “potentially explosive items”.

Residents were evacuated from their homes on Swiss Road, Risdale Road and South Liberty Lane on Tuesday evening, following reports of a man acting suspiciously.

Shortly after the suspect was detained at 7.10pm, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit arrived and are now checking if the property is safe.

A 100-metre cordon remains in place around South Liberty Lane with police officers, a bomb squad, specialist officers and fire and ambulance crews also present on the scene.

An Avon & Somerset Police statement released soon after 10pm said: “A major incident has been declared due to the number of emergency services at the scene. There are no casualties.

“Public safety is our main priority and therefore a precautionary 100m cordon has been put in place.

“There are 63 properties in South Liberty Lane, Risdale Road and Swiss Lane within that area. Ashton Vale Community Centre, in Risdale Road, is open to support those residents, if required.

“We are grateful for the public’s patience and understanding while we respond to this incident and would please ask the public to avoid the area at this time.”
