Major search operation in Cumberland Basin

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Mar 5, 2025

Cumberland Basin was drained of all its water on Wednesday afternoon as police officers and fire and rescue personnel searched for a person seen on CCTV entering the docks.

The search began on Tuesday and continued throughout much of Wednesday.

Inflatable boats and underwater teams in the water, horses on the land, and drones in the air all joined in the search in Hotwells.

In a statement on Wednesday afternoon, an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said: “The police Underwater Search Team, specialist search officers, detectives from our Investigations Department, and the mounted and drone unit, supported by the fire service and the harbourmaster, are in the area conducting water searches after a lone person was captured on CCTV entering the water yesterday (Tuesday).

“Searches were started yesterday evening by the police dive team and continue today. Enquiries are ongoing.”
