Major redevelopment plans revealed for Bart spices site

By Ellie Pipe  Wednesday Nov 24, 2021

The scent of spice that lingers down York Road will soon be a distant memory as Bart Ingredients HQ is set to be replaced with housing.

The company first established in Bristol in 1963 is due to consolidate and relocate all of its operations to Avonmouth and Donard Homes has revealed plans to build 244 ‘affordable’ homes on the brownfield site that backs onto Mead Street.

It could see the existing Bart buildings demolished to make way for new housing blocks of one, two and three-bedroom apartments on the land overlooking the River Avon that is a short walk from Temple Meads.

Donard says the proposed development would form the next phase of the Temple Quarter regeneration – an area earmarked by Bristol City Council for creating new homes and businesses.

The developer is proposing to create a new pedestrian route through the centre of the site, running adjacent to York Road, and has included five commercial units as part of the plans that could be home to cafes or office space. Donard has also pledged to plant 44 new trees along York Road, Mead Street and St Luke’s Road.

Around 40 parking spaces would be provided within the scheme, of which 80 per cent would have electric vehicle charging points and “ample secure cycle storage” is also proposed.

Donard bosses say their proposals will “seek to reinstate the area as a principally-residential neighbourhood”. They intend to connect the new homes to Bristol’s Heat Network as well as harnessing renewable energy through solar panels onsite.

A public exhibition of the plans will take place at Engine Shed on Tuesday, November 30 from 3pmto 7.30pm. People can also view and comment on the proposals via www.yorkgateconsultation.co.uk. The deadline for feedback is December 7.
