Labour mayor appoints Green as deputy
The cross-party collaboration at the top of the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority will continue as Labour mayor Helen Godwin appoints a Green politician to be her deputy.
Bristol City Council leader Tony Dyer takes over from Bath & North East Somerset leader, Lib Dem Kevin Guy, who was appointed Godwin’s first deputy mayor in May 2025.
Dyer, councillor for Southville ward, is the first Green deputy mayor of a combined authority.
The deputy role is held for 12 months and under Godwin’s mayoralty is being rotated among leaders of the combined authority’s three councils.
Dyer said: “Over the coming 12 months I will work with Helen to progress on our ambitions to deliver the housing our region needs, secure further investment in transport and support people’s skills and employment options.
“By working together across council boundaries and political parties, we can build on that potential, delivering the homes, transport and opportunities our residents need.”
Godwin added: “Across the West, council leaders and I share a progressive agenda for the future of our region.
“From reopening the Portishead railway line through the £200m contract signed at the end of April, to lifting children out of poverty through abolition of the two-child cap and our own regional action plan, we are determined to ensure that people can see and feel a real difference.”
