Just Stop Oil protesters slowly march through Bristol

By Martin Booth  Monday Sep 25, 2023

The noise of car horns from angry drivers inconvenienced by having to slow down accompanied Just Stop Oil as they marched through Bristol.

The protesters were marching peacefully on Saturday afternoon to demand no new oil, gas or coal.

Several dozen protesters, escorted by police, set off soon after midday from College Green towards Castle Park.

One of those taking part in the march was Peter Lillie, 30, a GP from Bedminster.

He said: “During the 2022 heat waves I treated elderly patients struggling to stay hydrated and young children dangerously hot with fevers.

“Every winter, I’m caring for patients with worsening respiratory conditions unable to afford to keep their homes warm and mould free.

“We need to stop all new oil, coal and gas projects and start insulating homes as a matter of urgency, or the levels of suffering we’re seeing will become even more catastrophic.”

Commenting on Bristol24/7’s video on Instagram, artist Jody, who painted Greta Thunberg on the side of the Tobacco Factory, said: “The bibs they are wearing and that banner is made of polyester which main constituent is petroleum.”

He added: ” I don’t agree with this form of protest. My Greta wall was meant to inspire and not aggravate, to win over the populous you need a positive message and pissing off Joe Public with this (hypocritical) buffoonery including throwing eggs at priceless works of art I will never support.”
