Hundreds march to save Hamilton House
An adapted version of ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ blaring out through Stokes Croft signified a demonstration filled with music and creative spirit.
Crowds filled the road and pavements outside Hamilton House, spilling over into Jamaica Street and Turbo Island, in protest at the prospect of the beloved community arts space being lost to profiteers.
As the Bristolised lyrics of ‘Take Me Home, Gloucester Road’ gave way to a vaguely tuneful chant of ‘Save Hamilton House’, cars beeped their horn in solidarity (presumably) and people of all ages brandished homemade placards.

If the owners of Hamilton House, Connolly & Callaghan (C&C), go ahead with plans to oust Coexist as custodians of the arts hub, and bring in an alternative management company, many fear that the core community values at its heart will be lost.
Hundreds of people turned out in a peaceful demonstration against this prospect and the pink-clad Ambling Band led the spirited musical march from Stokes Croft, through the Bearpit and on to College Green.
The aim of the protest was to demand that C&C come back to the negotiating table with Coexist and to call on them to place community value over profit and consider the sale of the building as a Community Land Trust.
