Hengrove Park Leisure Centre introduces Poolpod
Poolpods are specialist lifts that allow people with mobility challenges to enter swimming pools independently.
Poolpods were first invented in 2012 and Poolpod manufacturer Cotenda International say the device is designed to “help everyone get back in the pool with confidence and dignity“.
Hengrove Park Leisure Centre, operated by Lex Leisure – a community interest company and subsidiary of Parkwood Leisure – and Bristol City Council, have this week introduced a Poolpod device to allow easier access into their 50m swimming pool.
is needed now More than ever
The Poolpod at the Leisure Centre has space for either two seated adults, a seated adult with two children or a wheelchair user with their caregiver.

Poolpods were invented following a design competition run by the London 2012 Olympic Delivery Authority
Jo Morgan, centre manager at Hengrove Park Leisure Centre, said: “We know that, for many people, the thought of getting into a pool can feel daunting – whether due to mobility challenges, nerves or a lack of awareness about available support.
“The Poolpod is here to remove those barriers, giving more people the chance to experience the benefits of swimming.”
Alongside the Poolpod, the Leisure Centre have also kickstarted a new pilot, called ‘The Accessible Subscription’, that will allow gym goers the option of paying for two or four-week subscriptions to the Centre rather signing onto a monthly commitment.
Glen Hall, the managing director at Parkwood Leisure, said: “We have a mission to create truly inclusive spaces for all, but accessibility isn’t just about physical infrastructure, it’s about creating opportunities that genuinely support people’s individual needs.”
He added: “We are committed to ensuring that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, can access and enjoy the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle. Through targeted initiatives like the Accessible Subscription, and ongoing investment in accessible technology, we are making this ambition a reality.”
