First bit of resurfaced cycle lane through Centre opens
Some of the cycle path through the Centre has reopened with a new black tarmac surface and large white painted bike symbols in order to clearly differentiate it as a cycle path.
Work continues towards the Colston Avenue crossing with the aim of making the notoriously ‘invisible’ paths more visible.
White lines along the central section of the path have been painted on a strip of the previous surface that remains, with newly painted pedestrian crossings also now in operation.

Speaking earlier in June ahead of the works starting, vice chair of the transport & connectivity committee, Graham Morris, said he envisaged the changes “will be popular with many”.
Morris said: “The cycleway through this part of the centre has long been a site of conflict, with pedestrians often walking along it or across it without realising it’s not a footpath.”
Morris said he hopes the new black surface and white lines will stand out, adding that Bristol City Council has the option “to return later and add a red high friction surface, which is set to be trialled elsewhere in the city”.
“This will allow us to see the results of the trial, and how effective the black surface is, before committing to further works at Centre Promenade.”
