Fire breaks out in Bristol house

By Karen Johnson  and  Hannah Massoudi  Wednesday Aug 13, 2025

A fire has broken out in a home in east Bristol.

Flames licked the house with thick black smoke pouring from the upstairs windows of the property on Ducie Road in Barton Hill, opposite the Wellspring Settlement community centre.

While the cause of the fire remains unknown, Avon Fire and Rescue crews are using high-pressure hose reels to tackle the blaze.

A fire officer attending the scene told Bristol24/7 that as they turned off Lawrence Hill iinto Ducie Road, several local residents told them “to go one way” to avoid the East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood infrastructure while their maps were saying to go another.

Raneesa Ashfaq, who lives a few doors down from the affected house with her sister and her mum, said she was woken up by knocking on the door. She recalls the fire starting around 9am on Wednesday morning.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue said: “Avon Fire and Rescue Service is currently responding to a property fire in the Ducie Road area of Lawrence Hill, Bristol.

“Crews are using high-pressure hose reels to tackle the blaze. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

“Members of the public are asked to avoid the area where possible, and residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed to prevent smoke entering their properties.”
