Fewer than 200 votes decide by-election

By Bristol24/7  Friday May 25, 2018

The Conservative Party now hold all three seats in Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze following the election of Steve Smith (pictured above middle) in Thursday’s by-election.

The by-election in one of Bristol’s most affluent areas took place following the resignation of Lib Dem councillor Clare Campion-Smith, with Smith snatching her former seat by fewer than 200 votes.

Smith, a 40-year-old NHS GP practice manager and father-of-two who is committed to help prevent the closures of Westbury and Henleaze libraries, won 2,900 votes, finishing ahead of Lib Dem Graham Donald who received 2,704 votes.

Turnout in the by-election was 44.9 per cent, with Labour finishing third with 891 votes and the Greens fourth with 355.

Smith now joins the two sitting Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze Tory councillors Geoff Gollop and Liz Radford, with Labour still holding power in City Hall.

The next election of all Bristol councillors is due to take place in May 2020.
