Darren Jones appointed chief secretary to the treasury

Prime minister Keir Starmer has appointed Darren Jones to be chief secretary to the treasury in the first Labour government for 14 years.

The newly re-elected Bristol North West MP, who grew up in Lawrence Weston, will attend cabinet as part of his new job which is the de facto number two to chancellor Rachel Reeves.

Jones was expected to be joined in Starmer’s first cabinet by Thangam Debbonaire, but she was beaten in Bristol Central by Carla Denyer, with Lisa Nandy named as the culture secretary.

Reeves has become the UK’s first female chancellor, with Angela Rayner deputy prime minister, Yvette Cooper home secretary and David Lammy the new foreign secretary.

Jones tweeted: “I’m thrilled the Prime Minister has asked me to serve as his Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

“I can’t wait to get to work with the Chancellor and the rest of the Cabinet to turn the page and rebuild Britain.”
