Coronavirus live updates: May 11 2020

By Bristol24/7  Monday May 11, 2020

There is already confusion over Boris Johnson’s new ‘stay alert’ slogan, which he unveiled in an address to the nation on Sunday evening.

From Wednesday, people in England who “can’t work from home” will be “actively encouraged to go to work”. But they should still avoid public transport if possible because of social distancing.

Thanks for reading today’s updates. See you tomorrow.

2.51pm
The government is now advising everyone in England to use a face covering in enclosed spaces. They are urging people to make their own from an old T-shirt or cloth.

The advice says: “It is important to use face coverings properly and wash your hands before putting them on and taking them off.”

1.03pm
Boris Johnson will hold a news conference at 7pm this evening following the announcement of his “conditional plan” for lifting England’s lockdown. He will be taking questions from the media and the public.

12.23pm
Jury trials in England and Wales are to resume from next week, the lord chief justice, Lord Burnett, has announced.

11.20am
The starting point for lockdown fines will rise to £100 from Wednesday. The first fine will be lowered to £50 if paid within 14 days, according to the Home Office. Fines will double for each repeat offence, up to a maximum of £3,200.

10.46am
In Wales, “modest” changes to restrictions have come into force today which allow garden centres and libraries to open, and people to take exercise more than once a day. First minister Mark Drakeford has said the “stay at home” message has not changed, unlike in Bristol just over the Severn Bridge.

10.07am
One in every five NHS nurses is from a BME background. However, in many places their access to opportunities for progression is still significantly lower than their white colleagues.

What do people think about Johnson’s latest announcements?

9.17am
Many golf courses in England are preparing to reopen from Wednesday, following Johnson’s address to the nation.

New guidelines mean golfers will be allowed to play – on their own or with one member of their own household.

9.04am
People in England can meet up with others outside their household in the outdoors as long as they stay two metres apart, foreign secretary Dominic Raab has confirmed.

But he has urged people to “use some common sense” and people cannot visit others at home.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Raab said: “So we’ve said that as long as you go out of home, for the park, for exercise, whatever it may be, you can go with members of your own household.

“If you’re out in the park and you’re 2m apart… and use some common sense and you socially-distance, you can meet up with other people.”

8.45am

In case you missed it last night, here is prime minister Boris Johnson’s address to the nation:

Sorry, our mistake. That was Matt Lucas.
