Centre resurfacing work starts again after bodged first attempt

By Martin Booth  Friday Sep 5, 2025

The Centre is once again being ripped up as contractors start resurfacing it for the second time.

On Friday, a team from ETM began digging up the recently laid tarmac in the area where the fountains used to be.

Since the tarmac replaced the fountains, large puddles appeared whenever it rained with the newly installed drainage inadequate to clear the pools of water.

While it appeared to be a temporary solution, the tarmac was in fact meant to be permanent and the new tarmac is still due to be overlaid with a colourful artwork.

Bristol24/7 understands that there has been an impasse for months between Bristol City Council and ETM as the two argued who was responsible for the mistakes.

A Bristol City Council spokesperson confirmed that the new work “is taking place on the top layer of the new tarmac to ensure that water drains from the surface and does not collect in pools”.

He added: “This work is expected to be completed on Monday. We will be discussing costs with our contractor to make sure we are not charged for rectifying any defects.”
