Bristol’s Indian community celebrates country’s independence day
Nearly 400 people from Bristol’s Indian community gathered in Bradley Stoke to celebrate India’s 79th Independence Day.
On August 15, 1947 at the stroke of midnight, India was declared a free country after years of being a British colony.
The event hosted by the Indian Community of West of England, was led by the chair of Bristol’s Multifaith Forum, Tom Aditya, who was joined in by other councillors from Bradley Stoke Town Council for the celebration.

The event in Bradley Stook was held near Jubilee Centre
Raj Sood, a parish councillor for Downend Ward and Frenchay, spoke at the celebration: “From India, our legacy is only one thing. Work, work, work.”
The community ushered in love for their home country by singing songs and enjoying performance put up by children in the area.
The Indian national flag was also hoisted outside City Hall on Friday to commemorate the day.
