Thousands expected for Bristol anti-Trump demo

By James Higgins  Monday Jan 30, 2017

Thousands of demonstrators are expected on College Green from 6pm on Monday to protest against the controversial executive order from US president Donald Trump that has suspended refugee admissions and barred access to nationals from seven Muslim-majority nations.

Organisers are expecting large crowds on the same day that it was revealed that Bristol West has the biggest support in the UK for preventing Trump’s state visit.

The demonstration will attended by Bristol mayor Marvin Rees who will open proceedings at 6pm with a speech.

This will be followed by speeches including from representatives of Stand Up to Racism and Bristol Refugee Rights, and a statement read out on behalf Bristol West MP Thangam Debbonaire.

Bristol Refugee Rights chair of trustees, Chris Bertram, said: “Donald Trump’s executive order is disturbing on many levels. Refugees are ordinary people who are fleeing war and persecution and the US and the UK are signatories of the Refugee Convention which obliges them to fairly assess claims for asylum and not to send people back into danger.”

Event co-organiser El Orchard said: “I do hope that if Trump visits, these protests will make it very clear that we expect more of a stand against this ban from Theresa May and that we are absolutely not complicit.”
