Bristol24/7 to host WECA mayoral hustings in partnership with Watershed

By Lowie Trevena  Wednesday Apr 7, 2021

With less than 30 days before Bristol votes for a regional mayor, Bristol24/7 is pleased to announce more details for the first of two hustings that will be taking place in partnership with Watershed.

The West of England Combined Authority (WECA) mayoral hustings will be livestreamed via YouTube from 7pm on Thursday, April 22.

Four candidates are standing for the position of WECA mayor, replacing current Tory mayor Tim Bowles who is retiring at the end of his first term.

The Conservative candidate is Samuel Williams, who was initially standing for Bristol mayor before eyeing the bigger prize of regional representative.

He is standing against Labour candidate Dan Norris, a former MP who was also a Bristol councillor from 1989 to 1992.

Green Party candidate, Jerome Thomas, is currently a councillor for Clifton; while the Lib Dems’ Stephen Williams is also a former MP, who served Bristol West until 2015.

Each of the candidates will be given specific time limits in which to speak and answer questions.

Bristol24/7 Editor Martin Booth will be hosting both the WECA hustings on April 22 and the Bristol mayoral hustings on April 29.

Booth said: “I am delighted that Bristol24/7 and Watershed are joining forces to host these hustings. No topic will be off limits to candidates, who will have to be extremely well-prepared to answer questions from people across our city.”

Candidates will be asked a variety of questions by Booth and by audience members, with questions able to be submitted to [email protected] in advance.

Emails should have the subject line ‘WECA Hustings’ and include your name and which area of Bristol you live in. Questions can also be submitted live on the night via YouTube’s chat function.
