Raising awareness of autism

By Gabi Spiro-Larrea  Wednesday Mar 28, 2018

“Awareness raising won’t stop until everyone understands autism,” says Amy Gordon of the Milestone Trust who are hosting an event, Celebrating Autism, at the Vassall Centre in Fishponds on Wednesday, March 28.

The event will feature a range of speakers, including people with autism and their parents. They will share their personal experiences with autism in the hope to raise awareness and understanding of a disability, which affects more than 700,000 people in the UK.

The Milestones Trust – a Bristol-based charity who work closely with people with learning disabilities, mental health needs and dementia – are holding the event as part of World Autism Awareness Week 2018.

Between March 26 and April 2, Bristol will host a variety of events aiming to improve support, visibility and understanding of people with Autism.

“By creating a platform for both autistic people and their families to share their own personal experiences with others, we are looking to raise awareness of the challenges and barriers that society presents for them, as well as celebrating how awareness raising and different approaches have brought about positive change,” Amy added.

The event will be a chance for autistic people, their friends and families, people supported by the trust, their staff and other professionals within the sector, local schools and colleges, and support groups to come together.

As well as workshops and talks, there will be information stands and a chill-out area with soft music and sensory features where visitors can relax, and films running throughout the day.

Speakers include Keith Stuart (pictured top), the author of best-selling novel The Boy Made of Blocks.
