By Milan Perera  Monday Apr 7, 2025

A state-of-the-art youth facility, currently under construction, is set to receive a major boost in its sports offerings thanks to a partnership with Bristol Sport Foundation and other umbrella organisations based at Ashton Gate.

The 224 Youth Zone has joined forces with the Bristol Bears Community Foundation, Robins Foundation, Bristol Sport Foundation, and the Flyers Community as part of this new partnership.

224 Youth Zone, located close to the roundabout connecting Hartcliffe Way and Hengrove Way is expected to open in spring 2026.

Designed to support up to 4,000 young people, the centre will offer a wide range of activities, including a sports hall, fitness suite, climbing wall, and spaces for creative pursuits such as music, arts, and performing arts.

The partnership with the four leading sporting organisations in south Bristol is set to significantly enhance the sporting offerings of the facility.

Sarah Mortiboys, chief executive of Bristol Sport Foundation, said: “As a collective, we are proud to partner with Youth Moves to build a brilliant collaboration that will inspire the next generation to participate in sport and physical activity.

“We believe that every young person has the right to be the best they can be, and that sport has the power to unlock transformational learning, providing the building blocks for success.”

The £11m facility boasts a number of ambassadors, including musician Geoff Barrow, filmmaker Paul Holbrook and the much-loved local figure and Bristol Bears ace Ellis Genge.

Developed by OnSide Youth Zones in partnership with Bristol City Council and Youth Moves, the project presents an opportunity to invest in the future of Bristol’s youth, providing them with a space to grow, learn and thrive.

Matt Justice, chief executive of Youth Moves, said: “This partnership is a game-changer and will support us in reaching more young people across the city.

“By working together with the Bristol Bears Community Foundation, Robins Foundation, Bristol Sport Foundation, and Flyers Community, we can create more opportunities for young people to engage in physical activity, develop new skills, and be part of something bigger.

“Sport and physical activity have the power to transform lives, and this partnership is a testament to our shared commitment to making that a reality for young people in our community.”

The full details of the partnership are to be completed in due course, but all organisations involved have pledged to work together to support and enhance the lives of young people from south Bristol and beyond.
