The body of a man believed to be in his 40s was found on a motorway near Bristol.

The man’s body was on the carriageway of the M4 between junctions 20 at the Almondsbury Interchange and 21 at Awkley.

His immediate next of kin have already been informed and an investigation is underway as to how he came to be on the motorway.

Police were called at 6.40pm on Saturday by several drivers who had reported something in the road.

On Saturday evening and into the early hours of Sunday morning, the M4 was closed both ways between junctions 20 and 22.

Hundreds of people were stuck in their cars for hours with some drivers turning around and driving the wrong way down the hard shoulders in order to leave the motorway.

The eastbound carriageway reopened soon after 1.30am on Sunday and the westbound at around 3am.
