Banana Bridge restoration work to cost up to £2m
The Banana Bridge will be closed for up to 18 months from May as it becomes the latest bridge in Bristol to be refurbished.
Officially known as the Langton Street Bridge, the Grade II-listed span between York Road and Clarence Road has gained its nickname because of its distinctive shape and yellow colour.
Built in 1883, the iron and steel footbridge is a particular popular route for pupils at nearby St Mary Redcliffe School.

Cabinet member for transport, Don Alexander, said that the historic footbridge needs structural work “to safeguard it for future generations”.
Alexander said: “It is part of Bristol’s history and this will be the first time it’s had any major works, other than general maintenance, since 1884.
“We aim to complete the works as quickly as possible. I would like to thank everyone for their continued patience while we progress with our rolling programme of repairs to our New Cut bridges.”
The restoration of the Banana Bridge is likely to cost up to £2m which is being funded by the Department for Transport’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement.
