300 metres of bunting made out of upcycled materials
Multi-coloured bunting made from upcycled materials now covers the entirety of Christmas Steps.
Bunting-making parties were held in Finis Gallery and I Am Acrylic where wedding dress designer Karen Reilly sharing her expertise to help create 300 metres of bunting out of 700 triangles as the Christmas Steps Arts Quarter (CSAQ) community came together to celebrate Bristol Pride.
The materials donated by local residents and businesses, and sourced from charity shops, were all stitched together in Pride colours as a message that the area is a safe and welcoming space, as well as encouraging donations to year-round Bristol Pride events.

The area around Christmas Steps has a proud history in Bristol’s LGBTQ+ community, including the 49 Club where Chance & Counters is now located and the Aled Richards Trust which used to be at 54 Colston Street.
Dr Paul Green, who was instrumental in organising the project, said: “The local community really came together with volunteers from local business, residents and customers trapped in our web of bunting!
“Ruth and Brendan from I Am Acrylic have been amazing coordinating with the Christmas Steps Arts Quarter community.
“Our local wedding dress expert Karen Reilly was very patient briefing us on what would be needed ahead of time and then facilitating the successful bunting workshop.
“Thank you so much for everyone who got involved and all of those who have been inspired to support the wonderful work done by Bristol Pride this year!”
