5 Gaming Regulations to Be Aware of in 2024

UK government says online age verification is effective

Gaming is as popular as ever in the UK, but it is not without its rules. To ensure that gambling is being undertaken fairly and responsibly, there are regulations that gamers have to be aware of before playing. We’ve rounded up five of the most important to be aware of in the coming year.

Something that a lot of gamers in the United Kingdom may already be aware of is GAMSTOP, which is a gambling self-exclusion scheme. Anybody can sign up to use it, and it essentially stops users from being able to access certain gambling sites. Lots of UK-based betting operators have registered with GAMSTOP, but there are still some that are out of the scheme. This means that for those who do not want to place limits on themselves when gaming, there are still plenty of options to choose from, and even though these sites are not licensed by the UK Gambling Commission they are regulated by other reputable authorities, as Sergio Zammit writes.

There has been a real focus in 2023 on responsible gaming, and it is a trend that is sure to continue into 2024. It is likely that even more measures will be introduced to protect the security and well-being of players. Some of these steps may include more self-exclusion schemes and tighter verification processes, especially for age identification. Although some of these regulations may seem restrictive, they actually just lay the foundations for gamers to be able to play online with control and autonomy.

As part of the promotion to game responsibly comes more regulations, this time imposed on gambling operators. The UK Gambling Commission will be putting game providers under scrutiny to ensure that they are providing a secure and private experience for their users. A big concern for many these days is digital safety and data protection. People want to know that their personal and financial information is not being shared with third parties, and regulatory bodies exist to make sure this does not happen. Rules in place keep an eye on any suspicious or fraudulent activity that may be occurring and monitor it to make sure that gamers and game operators are safe.

Another regulation to be aware of in 2024 is the new technology that appears to be emerging. Artificial intelligence is being used in nearly all industries by now, and iGaming is no different. Any rules involving online privacy and security can be pushed forward through AI technology, broadening payment methods and speeding up transaction times. On top of this, artificial intelligence can be used to identify customer behaviours, thereby enhancing the gaming experience.

As innovative tech and responsible gaming are the words on everyone’s lips this year, it makes sense for transparency in gaming to become highly regulated. Expect to see terms and conditions and financial details of games being communicated clearly by gambling providers, and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates on every site!
