Using photos to explore the ‘homelessness pathway’

By Safiya Bashir  Thursday Jul 29, 2021

At the Arnolfini this summer, Jessie Edwards-Thomas will be exhibiting her work exploring five individuals who are currently within or have experienced the ‘homelessness pathway’ with complex needs in Bristol.

Jessie worked on the project over the winter lockdown, when peoples ideas of home and safe spaces really came to the forefront.

As part of the project, Jessie explored the impact of our physical spaces and what they can mean for our mental health.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

When working on the photos, she wanted to ask what home means to our sense of wellbeing. What is continuing to happen to our city spaces which is pushing people further and further away, physically, mentally and socially? How are individuals expected to navigate this homeless pathway?

The photography exhibition is being held at the Arnolfini until September 1. You can find more information about the event here: www.bristolphotofestival.org/grey-areas-jessie-edwards-thomas/
