Shop of the Week: Elevator Sound, Stokes Croft
Elevator Sound, a machine music hardware store on Stokes Croft, is a staple in the area.
First established in August 2014, the storefront, which directly faces Turbo Island, has a distinct black look that makes you feel like you’re about to visit the 22nd century when you enter the front door.
Inside, gadgets abound including synthesizers, modular systems, drum machines, samplers, mixers and more.
is needed now More than ever
Ben Chilton, who has been working as a shopkeeper Elevator Sound for almost as long as it has been open, pointed out some of the shop’s more unique gadgets when Bristol24/7 came to visit.

These fun gadgets include wired-up plant that can control “melodies and systems and voices” and a security camera “connected to a video synthesiser where you can change the colours and create shapes and textures”.
However, Elevator Sound can’t stock absolutely everything.
On their website they say that if they don’t immediately have what a customer is searching for (unlikely), they will do their “very best to track it down”.
When a customer couldn’t find some tech they were looking for during Bristol24/7’s visit, Ben encouraged them to head to Mickleburgh down the street.

It’s clear community is more important to Elevator Sound than competition.
So much so, that they will be hosting an electronic music technology festival in September, Machina Bristronica, where attendees will hear from an array of DJs, synth heads and engineers from across the world.
