Episode five of the Bristol24/7 Queer Catch-Up: queer joy, fighting transphobia and LGBTQ+ TV
The fifth episode of the Queer Catch-Up is now live!
In this episode, Kit Million Ross and Lowie Trevena discuss recent events at the University of Bristol, queer joy and also talk to George Millman, co-writer of Square.
This fortnight, Kit and Lowie start with an in-depth discussion on the accusations of transphobia by Women Talk Back, a society at Bristol University.
The society, which describes itself as “a space for women to engage in lively discussion and debate”, allegedly banned trans students from attending a talk on female sexual assault in March 2020. The society is currently under investigation by Bristol SU.
Queer joy is also an important talking point in this fortnight’s podcast. Kit and Lowie talk about some of the glimmers of light for Bristol’s LGBTQ+ community, including the announcement of Pride Day 2021 and Overflow coming to the Bristol Old Vic.
George Millman will also chat to the pair about Square, a drama about mental health, education, law enforcement and sexuality, set within Bristol’s left-wing activist scene.
George talks about LGBTQ+ representation and the continued trope of LGBTQ+ characters have little function within the story other than the fact that they’re queer.
“Nowhere in SQUARE do we even use words like ‘gay’ or ‘bisexual’ – not because they’re bad words (they aren’t), but because in our show relationships are treated exactly the same as heterosexual relationships would be,” he says.
“This is something that I think a lot of TV writers forget.”
