Fundraising, sobriety and performance: creating a queer haven
Several new queer events and spaces have popped up in the city over the past few years.
However, many of them are linked to clubbing and nightlife. Seeing the need for a sober space, Maks, also known as the drag performer Narcotik, created Queer Haven.

Maks, also known as Narcotik, identified a need for a queer, sober space for Bristol’s LGBTQ+ community
Queer Haven is a sober event that will run once every two months.
is needed now More than ever
The event is presented by Queer Links, an agency for queer performers and creatives based in Bristol.
Queer Haven will also be a fundraiser, with all ticket proceeds going to a different charity each time.
“We’re thinking of choosing Freedom as the charity for our first event. They’re providing a safe space for young queer people to discuss and explore their sexuality,” said Maks.
Freedom is a youth programme run by Off The Record. Freedom sessions are supported by LGBTQ+ youth workers who run events including games nights and workshops.

The first Queer Haven event will be on October 5 at La Panza from 5pm to 10pm.
There will be live music, DJs, Bristol-based market traders as well as a cabaret and Italian food will be served alongside mocktails.
“Looking at the world, and what’s happening, queers need to be together and support one another. There’s not enough sober spaces (and) creating one ensures more people can come along and become part of our chosen family,” Maks explained.
To promote the event, Maks has chosen pictures of their friends for the event poster, reflecting the event’s ethos of helping LGBTQ+ people find their chosen family and forge new connections.

The event aims to reflect the chosen family and community Maks has found in Bristol
Queer Haven will feature an exciting lineup of performers, including drag clubkids Narcotik and Ugly. Drag performer Miss Venus Wailer will host. Music will be provided by Indie band Vierz Collective and DJs Celine Dijon, Skillis and Slaggamuffin.
Maks said a mix of disco, electro and garage will keep attendees moving throughout.
Speaking about why they created Queer Haven, Maks said: “I love my queer family and how we support one another. I want to expand our network.
“We would love to welcome younger queers and those who don’t have a queer support network. Queer Haven will help you make new connections and find your queer chosen family.”
