In 1799, Dr Thomas Beddoes founded the Pneumatic Institution in Hotwells. There, a host of medical professionals began ambitious research projects including Sir Humphry Davis who began experimenting with the possibilities of nitrous oxide – which he soon labelled “laughing gas”. British historian Mike Jay’s new book focuses on a revolutionary series of experiments at the institute in his new book, Free Radicals, which will be published on Tuesday. To celebrate, there will be a book launch at Bookhaus.
