Prime by Pasture, Redcliffe: ‘The best start to the day’ – restaurant review
It’s called Prime but KSI and Logan Paul are nowhere near this new restaurant from Sam Elliott and the team behind Pasture who since opening their first restaurant on Portwall Lane in 2018 have expanded into Cardiff and Birmingham.
This new all-day concept has been several years in the making and promises to be a “bold new addition” to Bristol’s food scene. They want to “redefine burgers”: an ambitious claim in a city not short of options. But here, the chefs make everything in-house from scratch, “the way it should be”.
Prime has finally opened its doors among building work continuing in a corner of Redcliffe swiftly changing almost beyond recognition. For those with longer memories, this is the site of what a decade ago was longstanding Chinese restaurant Dynasty. In its first week of opening, the finishing touches were still being put to the butchers next door, which as well as the usual meaty fare will also be selling air-fryer ready meals.
is needed now More than ever
Sometime in the future, Prime could be on a strip of new restaurants, cafes and bars between Redcliff Street and St Thomas Street; with units currently being used by construction teams working on the neighbouring developments.
On a recent morning soon after 9am, the place was already full of the sound of excited chatter as young families with children still too young for school, local residents, office workers and builders still in their PPE enjoyed a leisurely start to their day.
Elliott was among the brigade in the open kitchen and I counted seven front of house staff with various branded workwear on including t-shirts with numbered menu items on the back. The ten different burgers here range in price from £11 to £15, with a choice of a double smash patty or ‘pink & juicy’; the #5 the pick of the bunch with smoked house cheese, pulled pork, ‘competition’ barbecue sauce, pickles and crispy onions.
There are also chicken and plant-based burgers as well as chicken wings brined and coated in a ‘secret’ flour blend (five for £9 or ten for £16).
But I was here for breakfast so the burgers will have to wait. I have previously enjoyed Pasture’s delicious bacon bap at the Balloon Fiesta (where they will be returning in August) so I ordered a sausage and egg muffin with bacon jam and house cheese (£9) which was the best and tastiest start to the day I have had for a long while; Pasture’s promise of the best provenance and top-quality ingredients encapsulated in a tottering tower.
To balance out the protein and fat, I also ordered a bowl of granola (£6), with creamy yogurt, honey, crunchy cocoa nibs and the excellent addition of a few mint leaves just to give it an extra zing.
Who needs annoying YouTubers when a Bristol-based business is as good as this? I would start every morning here if I could.
