A-Z Bristol Pub Crawl: The Horse & Jockey, St George
A tinny commentary of a darts game rings out as you push open the door to the Horse & Jockey, with customers’ eyes flitting between the screen and their companions.
It’s the sort of pub where the regulars never have to order, but instead have perfectly poured pints delivered to their sides before they’ve even finished the last.
Wrapped up in a familiar British nostalgia that speaks of an old social club, everyone here is on a first name basis.
is needed now More than ever
It’s something that feels more akin to a family reunion.
“Alright then Dave!’, a chorus chimes as a motorbike helmet-clad man saunters in, taking what can only be assumed as his usual seat at the bar.
Thanks to the attentive bartender, a pint of Bass and a packet of pork scratchings are already waiting for him.
Behind Dave, a poster advertises will writing services, but it is juxtaposed by a cheery printout written in Comic Sans celebrating: “We have wifi again!”
In the corner sits a pool table and a designated, well-loved darts section, featuring a palimpsest of scores and players that feels like it ought to be preserved.
The bar features a collage of ale badges, spotlighting local brews from Arbor alongside a bitter called ‘Old Man’ ale.
Occasionally, the pub’s old jukebox will start up, playing anything from old rock classics to ‘I Was a Fool’ by Sunflower Bean.
As it nears 8pm, the locals start to gather their things, comparing what tea will be waiting for them at home.
While they file out the door, the bartender restocks the pork scratchings and fills the fridges with cans of Natch.
