Moomin themed cafe opens in Bristol

By Hannah Massoudi  Friday May 30, 2025

A Moomin themed cafe opened on Friday in the city centre.

Located on Park Street, the children’s animated classic is a takeover of the boba tea cafe CUPP.

According to Tove, the term mumintroll was originally coined during her childhood by her uncle in attempt to deter a young Tove from stealing from the pantry as “cold moomintrolls” occupied it – photo: Isobel Higley

The immersive decorations feature a whimsical makeshift tower where visitors can collect their food and drinks from.

Customers will be able to get limited edition themed drinks, suchs as the Moomintroll Strawberry Lemonade, the Moominpappa Pancake Milk Tea and the Snorkmaiden Cherry Blossom Milk Tree.

The cafe not only sells boba tea, but pancakes and Moomin plush toys.

Tove Jansson’s Moomins were created in 1945 and the troll family became instantly recognisable across the world, inspiring several television series, films and two theme parks.

To celebrate the store’s transformation, CUPP will be giving away free CUPP x Moomin merch to the first 100 customers queuing at its doors on Friday from midday.

The store will then be open from Monday to Sunday, 10am to 8pm.

The Bristol born cafe franchise started serving bubble teas out of a car in 2012 before expanding to two permanent premises in Bristol and 32 others throughout the country.

Founder Lee Peacock’s was determination to stick as close as possible to the original recipe. Using only quality loose leaf tea, fresh fruit and shaking each drink individually are part of Cupp’s success from those humble beginnings in Bristol.

Cupp has previously collaborated with the likes of Rimmel London to produce a bubble tea range that matches tea flavours to the scents of lip oils.
