Margot May tearoom

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Sep 23, 2014

Where once traditional tea rooms proliferated in Bristol, nowadays it is all about trendy cafes with chipboard covering every available surface.

Bucking that trend is Margot May on North Street in Bedminster.

Just verging the right side of chintzy, it has a bright pink display cabinet, colourful cushions on the painted white chairs, old church pews against one wall, and fresh flowers on each table and more creating a miniature meadow outside.

It’s one of those places (in what was formally a chartered accountants office) where every little detail  has evidently been thought about – and most of it works well.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

There are 15 varieties of tea on offer here from £2.10 to £2.50, categorised by black tea, flavoured black tea, green tea, herbal blends and other varieties, which include Rooibos from South Africa and snow buds from Fujian province in south-east China.

Each is displayed in their dry form in vintage china cups and small glasses on a counter also piled high with cakes and pastries.

Coffee is from Extract with soya and decaff available at no extra cost.

Using bread from Mark’s Bread the other side of North Street, the lunch option here is sandwiches all priced at £4.95, with summer specials including a salad of beetroot, broad beans and bacon served with ciabatta.

With the closure of Lahloo in Clifton Village still smarting for Bristol tea enthusiasts, Margot May has gone some way to filling that void.
