Review: The Bodyguard, Hippodrome
There must only be a few people who don’t know the story of The Bodyguard. Pop icon Rachel Marron is stalked by a gunman hired by jealous sister Nicki, then saved by Frank Farmer, a bodyguard with whom she then falls in love.
This touring version of the show is a revelation. It literally kicks off with a bang when a gunshot goes off, and remains quite the attention-grabber throughout. To get the best out of the experience, you have to see this as a stage show in its own right, and not just a remake of the 1992 movie starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner.
The original West End stage show starred Heather Headley as Rachel Marron: however, X Factor winner Alexandra Burke is a worthy successor, sensibly pitching the song keys appropriately to her vocal range.
A slowish start, featuring Houston hits Queen of the Night and How Will I Know, is followed by a silky rendition of Saving All my Love for You from Melissa James, who plays the part of sister Nicki Marron.
Melissa’s delivery continues to challenge Alexandra throughout the night, and in the end her star quality was confirmed with a soulful One Moment in Time and the finale I Will Always Love You. Her performance of the latter can only be described as a masterpiece, bringing the whole auditorium to their feet.
The touring production is actually more sophisticated than the West End stage show, with outstanding sets, laser lighting and a raft of the latest presentational techniques. OK, so it’s not Whitney Houston, but it is well acted, professionally presented, and backed by a superb ten-piece live ensemble.
Finally, the young and special Daniel Daszek-Green has to get a mention. From his first impressive back flip to his finale appearance, he puts on a faultless performance as Rachel’s son Fletcher.
Tonight was a sell-out performance and there is no doubt why. Theatre does not get much better than this.
The Bodyguard continues at Bristol Hippodrome until Saturday, Jan 30. For more info and to book tickets, visit www.atgtickets.com/shows/the-bodyguard/bristol-hippodrome
