Review: Kid Carpet & Noisy Animals, Old Vic
Fatherhood has transformed Ed Patrick from Kid Carpet the musician used to playing in festival fields to Kid Carpet the musician now playing in front of a far more difficult audience – young children.
During this half-term, his current tour stops off in his home town as the St Werburghian presents a slight reworking of his first solo show alongside his Noisy Animals.
There’s a bear; a bear in a boat in a bath. There’s a rather posh badger, a mute hedgehog and a lairy gorilla.
All these toys are brought to life by camera and video trickery, as they join Kid Carpet the international rock star on his way to a dance contest.
My three-year-old daughter has now seen this show three times, every year she has crawled, toddled and walked on this earth.
And she absolutely loves it, loudly singing many the words to the songs about numbers and poos and gleefully joining in with the dance contest at the end.
Patrick has a marvelous knack for entertaining the children while also keeping the attention of their parents with his cheeky humour and quick wit, helped by some nifty work with a turntable and toy piano.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable children’s show for all ages.
Kid Carpet and the Noisy Animals is at the Bristol Old Vic studio until Saturday. Visit www.bristololdvic.org.uk/kidcarpet.html for tickets and more information.
