Chris Fonseca’s BSL-led hip-hop theatre show explores Deafness in a hearing world

By Sarski Anderson  Wednesday Aug 14, 2024

“Everyone can dance,” says dancer, choreographer, actor and teacher, Chris Fonseca. “It’s not about moves. It’s about feeling.

“Dance is the very core of who I am – all my experiences, trips and joy have their place in my choreography.

“It’s about capturing the emotion of the moment in a unique and physical flow of tension and release to create something meaningful and positive.”

Fonseca has been Deaf since contracting meningitis as an infant.

Co-written with Harry Jardine, his critically acclaimed autobiographical show Follow The Signs takes audiences through his early childhood and school days, through to university and adult life.

Billed as “a fully BSL-led hip-hop gig theatre show”, it is performed through a a blend of “BSL, rap, spoken English, movement, and creative captioning, to be shared and celebrated by Deaf and audiences together”.

Telling the story of his life as a man who is “Deaf in a hearing world”; and “Black on a racist island”, Fonseca’s show is ultimately a hopeful narrative about the journey to self-confidence and “owning your identity”.

Follow The Signs is at Tobacco Factory Theatres on September 4-7 at 8pm. Tickets are available at www.tobaccofactorytheatres.com. Follow @itschrisfonseca and @fusetheatre for more information.
