Bristol Old Vic Theatre School prepares for its annual Summer Festival

By Sarski Anderson  Thursday May 7, 2026

Bristol Old Vic Theatre School’s annual summer festival is returning on May 21, with four double bills taking place on successive weekends at Bristol Old Vic’s Weston Studio.

As ever, the festival presents an opportunity to see the 3rd year graduating students of the BOVTS Professional Acting course, with both direction and design from students of their respective MA courses at the school.

All eight of the featured plays have been chosen by BOVTS artistic director Emma Callander for their capacity to showcase the widespread talents of the ensemble cast and creatives.

Opening this year’s event will be Jake Brunger’s millennial comic ‘rom-com’ Four Play, exploring “the messiness of modern monogamy”, alongside Meat, Gillian Greer’s absorbing three-hander about the vagaries of consent.

The second weekend will see Ché Walker’s play about grief and trauma, The Étienne Sisters come to the stage, followed by debbie tucker green’s powerful exploration of three neighbours connected by domestic violence, dirty butterfly.

Then comes Sonali Bhattacharyya’s King Troll, described as “a folkloric thriller examining the complex narratives and emotions surrounding the asylum system”. Completing this third double bill will be Tom Basden’s satirical play The Crocodile, based on the Dostoevsky short story of the same name.

Wrapping up this year’s BOVTS Summer Festival are Simon Longman’s Island Town, a coming-of-age tale of three teens dreaming of an escape from their provincial lives, and Blackthorn, described as “a lyrical, decade-spanning drama” that charts “the shifting relationship between the only two children born into a small North Yorkshire village”.

Bristol Old Vic Theatre School Summer Festival is at The Weston Studio, Bristol Old Vic between May 21-June 13; there are four double bills in successive weeks, with shows at 7pm on Thursday-Saturday, and an additional 1.30pm matinee on Saturday.

Tickets are available at www.bristololdvic.org.uk, and shows are recommended for ages 14+.
