Tricky’s new album ‘draws strongly’ on Bristol influence
Trip hop pioneer Tricky has announced a new album, the first record released under his own name in six years.
The Knowle West-born artist and producer has had a dynamic musical career since co-founding Massive Attack and going on to release his critically acclaimed solo debut Maxinquaye in 1995.
Different When It’s Silent, due for release on July 17 on his own label False Idols, will be his 15th studio album. Its 14 tracks blend blues, brooding electronics, distorted guitars and hip hop rhythms.
Recorded between Tricky’s current home, France, and his native Bristol, the album reportedly “draws strongly on the musical community that shaped him” with Bristol singer Mitch Sanders prominent throughout the record.

It follows 2020’s solo record Fall to Pieces, joint projects Lonely Guest and Theis Thaws, and last year’s album Out the Way, released with long-time collaborator Marta Złakowska.
The singer features on the first single from the forthcoming album, Out of Place which pairs her restrained, deadpan vocal with lush strings and Tricky’s own punk-style delivery and comes in at just over 2.5 minutes.
Tricky’s much anticipated performance at the Bristol Beacon on May 17 is the first of two homecoming shows planned for this year, with the artist also appearing at FORWARDS festival in August.
“I just love making music” he said. “I’m grateful I’ve had the chance to live this life and keep creating.”
