Spin Class release EP bursting with ‘raw energy’

By Ursula Billington  Thursday Jul 31, 2025

Bristol rock quartet Spin Class have released their second EP.

Brimming with hair metal swagger, with vocals reminiscent of Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell or Axel Rose’s famed falsetto over heavy guitars and full throttle driving rhythms it is, the band says, a peak inside a mind that is an “ADHD-fuelled, visually stimulating riff machine”.

Dinner at Derek’s touches on themes of mental health, intrusive thoughts and addiction.

It was recorded live to fully capture the frenetic energy of the band’s live show.

Unashamedly rooted in rock, the EP’s five tracks include elements of prog, grunge and metal, with reflective vocals and catchy melodic choruses making an appearance alongside the heavy hooks and thrash-outs.

“This EP feels like a new era of Spin Class,” said vocalist Louis Slater.

“Dinner at Derek’s promises a menu of shorter yet fuller tunes, chock full of chops and changes, riffs to make your belly rumble and melodies you’ll find yourself singing along to, without even realising.

“We’ve approached this body of music with feeling rather than thinking, which comes across especially in the performance as the whole EP was recorded live. This has been a massive feat for us but one we loved and will most likely be our process moving forward. We are very proud of this EP.”

Spin Class have embraced Bristol’s creative community, working with visual artists, videographers, musicians and engineers based in the city

The decision to record live, with Josh Gallop of Krooked Tongue and Phoxjaw at the helm, was based on the methods of the artists they admire.

“Bands like Soundgarden and Led Zeppelin and how they recorded tracks were a heavy influence for us in the creation of this EP,” said Slater.

“This live approach has been something we’ve never done before but felt very natural. We’re a live band first at the end of the day, and capturing that raw energy in the production was essential.

“The result bounces between overstimulated punk intensity with each violent transition amplifying the live feel we’ve wanted to capture at gigs and rehearsals.”
