‘South of the River’: a new anthem for Bristol City
While many football clubs have big anthems which bring fans together, Bristol City is yet to find a song that sticks.
Singer-songwriter Danny Pugh is hoping to change that.
His new song, South of the River, is a passionate tribute to his team and has been released ahead of City’s biggest game for years as they take on Sheffield United at Ashton Gate on Thursday evening in the first leg of the Championship play-off semi-final.
is needed now More than ever
South of the River kicks off with Danny listing places across Bristol where you can find supporters, “from East Street Bemmy to Clifton Downs, Dundry Fields or Windmill Hill”.
Backed by guitar and drums, the song builds to a rallying cry: “No matter where I go, red and white’s in my veins.”
Speaking on the 3 Peaps in a PodCast, City fan Matt Withers said: “I’d love this to be a song we adopted. It really resonated with me.”
Danny has previously released dreamlike indie-pop music under the name SIG SALI, but this song marks a significant departure from his usual style.
Danny will be performing South of the River live ahead of Thursday’s match at the Three Lions on West Street at 6pm.
Three Lions landlord and passionate City fan Sean Donnelly said he could not be more excited about the song, saying “it epitomises City fans and has an anthemic feel to it”.
“Lyrically, it’s about a normal working-class man from south Bristol who has a passion for his and our football team.”
