Soul night celebrates rich history of Black music

By Ursula Billington  Tuesday Jun 17, 2025

A night set up to celebrate soul-infused sounds is gearing up for its biggest showcase yet.

Soul in the City will present live music encompassing R’n’B, pop and jazz-influenced genres.

The night has relocated from its former home the Crafty Egg to premier music venue the Louisiana in order to upscale for its third iteration on June 27.

The headline act is the event’s organiser, Maxime Elliot, who will be capping off the night with his own brand of dramatic pop-soul.

“It’s going to be a beautiful and fun night of soulful music with incredible local talent,” he said.

A French-born artist, Elliot has been championed by BBC Introducing since moving to Bristol five years ago where he has been active on the local music scene, releasing records, playing this year’s Outer Town festival and selected to take part in a songwriting residency led by Chris Difford of Squeeze.

Born in Lyon, he was musically inspired by French pop as well as soul and R’n’B.

“Soul music has a way of cutting through noise,” Elliot says of the music that he loves. “It’s honest, emotional, and deeply rooted in the rich history of Black music.

“I wanted to create a night that celebrates that vulnerability and power in Bristol, while shining a light on emerging artists.”

For Soul in the City, he is joined on the bill by London-based singer-songwriter Scarlett Fagan pairing soul and jazz with soul-baring lyrics, and influenced by Amy Winehouse – who herself played the Louisiana over 20 years ago, in 2003 – and Etta James.

Her live show is described as ‘raw and honest but with a sultry, seductive edge’.

The night is completed by Welsh artist Josh Hicks, known for his emotive vocals and heartfelt storytelling. Organisers say his sound is reminiscent of the ‘golden age’ of American soul music, with a modern lyrical awareness.

Soul in the City takes place at the Louisiana on Bathurst Terrace on June 27. All information and tickets can be found at headfirstbristol.co.uk/whats-on/the-louisiana/fri-27-jun-soul-in-the-city
