Review: Gareth Sager, Exchange

By Elfyn Griffith  Monday Jan 16, 2017

‘The stripper’s on next’ jokes the piano player after the first flush of classicism in the downtown bar.

Gareth Sager, The Pop Group’s guitarist/keyboard player (and formerly of Rip Rig and Panic) is performing an intimate free early afternoon show in the Exchange to promote his new piano album 88 Tuned Dreams.

There’s a thoughtful almost cinematic reverie about Sager’s material here. Classic sweeps and moody passages undercut with bluesy/jazzy intonations and half-remembered melodies, emotional flourishes capturing the imagination, and a sombreness coloured by light. The odd bum note adds to the whole.

Maybe no stripper, but Sager bears his soul a bit here and it’s quite satisfying…
