Adult Leisure video ‘pays homage to local music scene’

By Ursula Billington  Friday Mar 21, 2025

Dancing Don’t Feel Right, the latest single from indie quartet Adult Leisure, follows drummer Nathan Searle on a jittery walk around Bristol in retro sportswear and sweatband, stopping outside music venues in what bassist Luke Denham says are “subtle nods to iconic grassroots venues like the Louisiana and Thekla”.

Set to an unashamedly emotive alt-pop soundtrack, the song encourages listeners to break free and embrace their innermost desires.

“We wanted to create a track that asks listeners to step out of line, ditch their inhibitions, and give in to the temptation of doing exactly what they shouldn’t,” the band said.

“It’s a narrative of inner conflict, desire and rebellion. The track captures the feeling of being on the edge, stuck in a moment where you know you should hold back, but something – or someone – won’t let you.

Dancing Don’t Feel Right is our way of ignoring responsibility, silencing the voice of reason, and giving into the forbidden thrill of indulgence. The song is about the urge to let loose, to break out of the mould and do the bad thing.”

Released on Friday, the video – that culminates in a dance mat scene in an arcade – was shot on an iPhone and edited by the band themselves, its 720×720 aspect ratio replicating the feel of a vintage film.

As well as a paean to burning personal passions, the video reflects the struggles encountered by grassroots artists in the current financial climate.

“As with our previous video Kiss Me Like You Miss Her, it reflects the DIY spirit of an emerging band navigating rising costs,” said Denham. “We aimed to capture a carefree dancer moving with abandon, perfectly mirroring the song’s playful but rebellious theme.

“The video pays homage to our local music scene while keeping things simple, authentic and full of energy.”
