‘Wayfinder’ director visits the Watershed to talk about his film

By Robin Askew  Thursday Jul 7, 2022

The lockdown flick has become a genre all of its own of late, but none have been quite as distinctive or ambitious as British-Ghanaian first-time director Larry Achiampong’s Wayfinder. Seemingly one of a handful of survivors, a young protagonist known only as the Wanderer (Perside Rodrigues) embarks on an odyssey through a post-pandemic, post-Brexit Britain, reflecting on empire, racism and identity.

As you might expect from an artist who works in sculpture, installation, sound, collage, music and performance, this is no ordinary drama but more of a mythic cinematic tone poem. Viewers are encouraged to draw their own connections between its discrete chapters.

Perside Rodrigues is cast as ‘The Wanderer’

“I never set out to create a film of this size,” says Achiampong, “but due to the scope of ideas that evolved along the way, it increasingly became inevitable that this would become my first feature film.”
