Harry Shearer joins in next month’s Slapstick funfest

By Robin Askew  Thursday Jan 19, 2023

Since we revealed the full programme for Slapstick, Bristol’s annual festival of classic and silent comedy, a number of small changes and additions have been announced. The biggest news is that it’s been confirmed that Harry Shearer will definitely be joining Michael Palin in providing a video introduction to the screening of Palin’s favourite film, This Is Spinal Tap, at the former Bristol IMAX on February 15. It’s also quite possible that he’ll be doing so in Derek Smalls guise.

Alas, Stephen Mangan has encountered a clash with his overseas filming commitments, so won’t be able to present Why I Love Laurel and Hardy at the Bristol Old Vic on February 19. His place is being taken by Griff Rhys Jones. Also at Bristol Old Vic on the same day, Mike McGear – aka Mike McCartney, brother of Beatle Paul – will now be grilled about his Fabs memories by fellow Scouser Paul McGann ahead of the screening of Richard Lester’s wonderful A Hard Day’s Night.

Finally, the Screen Wonder Women event hosted by Lucy Porter and Jane Duffus on February 15 has been shifted from the former IMAX to the Watershed. The 6pm start time remains the same.
