‘Hagsploitation’ double bill comes to Bristol Megascreen
A double bill highlighting Hollywood’s demonisation of older women is coming to Bristol Megascreen on Sunday.
The event, which is screening the Bette Davis-starring The Nanny from 1965 and the 2022 slasher X, is part of a weekend of events that examine ‘hagsploitation’ and ‘psycho biddy’ films, a subgenre of horror and thriller that feature older women in villainous and monstrous roles.
Organisers of the event say that they were particularly motivated by actress Demi Moore’s recent Oscar nomination (and loss) for 2024’s The Substance, which stars Moore in a classic ‘hagsploitation’ role.

The films will be introduced by Bristol-based horror filmmaker Sophie Mair and UWE’s senior lecturer in film studies, Dr Lies Lanckman.
Themed cocktails and mocktails will be available in the foyer from Sam Espensen of Espensen Spirit.
Doors will open at 12.30pm, with the event starting at 1pm.
